On what grounds is Rocky Mountain High better than Take Me Home Country, Country Roads?Rocky is a bullshit song about a state. Take Me Home is a song about place, belonging, and home.
Country Roads was written without the songwriter ever having been to West Virginia. It’s a song with the universal appeal of loving the place where you’re from. It’s a song about coming home, and it uses the state of West Virginia as a place holder.Rocky Mountain High was written to capitalize off of the universal success of Country Roads, Take Me Home and just picked a different state with mountains in it.
It’s a catchy tune, but it’s shit compared to Country Roads.Jesus. I can’t explain to you how much I disagree with you, or how angry at I am over how wrong I think you are. You’re basically saying that the film Casino is better than The Godfather. Casino is NOT better than The Godfather and would not exist without the success of The Godfather. God fucking damn it!
I’m irrationally upset right now. Fuck you. The Godfather is possibly the greatest film I’ve ever seen, I love every second, and I’ve never bothered to watch Casino. But to the real matter at hand, I see all your points about Country Roads and Rocky Mountain High.
There’s something great to be said for the feeling of going home, but there’s something even greater to be said about the feeling imbued by a mountain. That’s like saying the Southwest US doesn’t have rivers because the Colorado is a creek compared to the Mississippi and Missouri. West Virginia is the only state that lies completely within the Appalachian Mountain range. Colorado has plains, desert, canyons, and mesas. The Rockies might be taller than the Appalachian chain, but a Mountain is a mountain, and no state is more mountainous than West Virginia. And what’s more repetitive that hearing “Rocky Mountain High (high!) Colorado” half a dozen times in a row?Compare: “I hear her voice, in the morning hour she calls me, the radio reminds me of my home far away.
And driving down the road I get a feeling that I should have been home yesterday”To: “Of a simple thing he cannot comprehendWhy they try to tear the mountains down to bring in a couple more. More people, more scars upon the land”What?Or: “When he first came to the mountains his life was far away. On the road and hanging by a song. But the string's already broken and he doesn't really care, It keeps changing fast and it don't last for long.”To: “All my memories gather round her.Miner's lady, stranger to blue water.Dark and dusty, painted on the sky,Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye.Country Roads is an objectively better song. I’d say they’re equally symbolic, equally meaningful, and perhaps equally repetitive, objectively speaking. I submit that they are objectively equal, and you subjectively prefer Country Roads, while I subjectively prefer Rocky Mountain High, based on our own experiences in life. Most people would disagree, but I’d say that subjective value, in this case, is far more important than objective value, because both are songs that hit close to home for one of us.And looking at the bigger picture, we can agree that we’re both, at least in part, fans of John Denver, which makes us infinitely superior to fans of the trash they record now. Except I’m not really a fan John Denver.
I only like Country Roads, Take Me Home. The rest of his songs are completely unappealing to me (being completely subjective).“I’m leaving on a jet plane, don’t know when I’ll be back again.” Well, make a better itinerary, jackass.
It’s not like he was singing about shipping off to war. And who says “jet plane.” It’s a plane or a jet or an aircraft or any number of other things but they are never called “jet planes.” Nobody says that.“Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy.” Then take your damn shirt off and be happy.“Yeah, but Sunshine hurts my eyes and makes me cry” (I’m paraphrasing now). Then wear sunglasses.“Sunshine looks good on the water.” (Still paraphrasing). With or without the sunglasses?“Sunshine gets me high.” Ok. So you like the sun.
It makes you cry and feels good on your shoulders, and looks good reflected by water, and so you’re high now. That’s great. You must save money not buying actual drugs.I know he has other songs—something about margaritas, maybe? I don’t know. But Country Roads, Take Me Home is a masterpiece.
(Link in meme-roll)Rocky Mountain High (1975). Because recommended John Denver I llllluuuuuurrrrrrve John Denver!Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it.1) In this song, Denver sings that he was 'born in the summer of his 27th year,' because that's when he discovered the place where he felt most at home. What do you remember about your 27th year?
(If it hasn't happened yet, what do you want to happen when you're 27?) I actually have no strong memories of 1990, my 27th year. I'm sure my work life was a mess (this was when I worked for PsychoBoss). We moved in June of that year to an upper flat that would have been lovely if it had been updated in our lifetime (the carpet was at least as old as I was!). Life outside of work was the best it had ever been, I was still skinny as a rail and working out regularly at the Y, and that might have been the year we bought our roll-top desk. 2) In 2007, the Colorado General Assembly named this one of the state's two official songs. (The other is 'Where the Columbines Grow.' ) Do you know your state song?
I used to know-or at least be able to recognize-'Where the Columbines Grow' but it's been awhile. I'm not sure I've ever heard for my current location.
I do know the state song from a former state of residence-the one where my son was born-because we used its tune for my high school fight song. 3) John Denver was a dedicated environmentalist who wrote an anthem about Earth Day. Are you careful about your energy consumption? Do you recycle? I'm sort of careful because I'm a cheapskate, and I have recycled for at least 40 years of my life, probably more. 4) 1975 is also the year that Denver released a collection of holiday songs called Rocky Mountain Christmas.
On this August day, what's the first carol that comes to mind? 'Jingle Bells'-ugh! 5) Denver dabbled in photography in his spare time and friends say he was quite good.
Tell us about your hobbies. This is my hobby.
And reading; I'm in the midst of book #s 65-70 right now. And general laziness.

6) In 1975, when this song was popular, mood rings were all the rage. It was said that the ring reflected the wearer's mood. Black = anxious/stressed, orange = worried, green = normal, blue = happy, pink = as good as it gets. As you respond to this week's Saturday 9, what color would your mood ring be?
Since there's no option for physically wiped out, I'll go with green, I guess. My mood ring was usually black or blue as I recall. It was all about relative skin temperature, and I had cold hands quite often. 7) Pet Rocks were 1975's other odd cultural phenomenon. Do you have any real-life, breathing pets?
We have two guinea pigs: Ruka and Pintobean. My brother had a pet rock, actually.;-) 8) 1975 saw the premiere of Wheel of Fortune.
Are you good at word puzzles? I love word puzzles. This summer is the 40th anniversary of my sister Ellen introducing me to full-on puzzle mode: acrostics, crosswords, word-searches, cryptograms. It's all on her! 9) Random question: Did you sleep well last night?
I slept about like normal: 11 - 1:30 = out like a light. 1:30 - 4 = awake and reading/doing ^word puzzles^ on my Nook. 4 - 7:30 = zonked till Beast woke me up as he left to get the U-Haul. Those are pretty standard nighttime hours for me. So irritating-I really hope when I get my sleep study stuff sorted out, things change. 4sweet-talkers:said.Like you, I have mastered 'general laziness.'
;)said.I'm interested to hear about your sleep study because my sleep is generally like yours! I'd been blaming menopause.said.My sleep patterns are the same, but sometimes I can get back to sleep.said.They say I have some kind of minor upper respiratory blockage, so I may need a CPAP.
Or I may be able to get by with a special mouth-guard that brings my lower jaw forward. Also, they say I have very restless legs. But I think the waking up thing is just the way life is, unrelated to sleep apnea.
